AMU Plaza Fukuoka is a shopping complex connected to Hakata Station, with shops, restaurants and a roof garden from basement level B1 to the tenth floor. At the source date, the Disney Store was on the fifth floor and the Pokémon Center on the eighth, useful stops with children. Nearby are Hakata Hankyu, KITTE Hakata’s Marui and DEITOS, making this a convenient shopping area. Its central location is well connected, and the account also notes tax-free shopping procedures and currency-exchange services.

Today we visited City Dining Kuuten (くうてん), the restaurant floors on levels nine and ten of JR Hakata City, connected to Hakata Station. The original account interprets Kuuten as ‘a garden in the sky.’ Along with the roof garden, it offers views over Fukuoka. Around 60 restaurants covered everything from traditional Kyushu cooking to international cuisines at the source date.

Craving seafood, we went to the tenth floor and TOC-TOC, known in the account for fresh seafood delivered directly from Fukuoka’s Nagahama Market. Primarily an izakaya, it also served lunch sets. The stand-out choice was maguro zuke-don (マグロ つけ丼): tuna sashimi marinated in a seasoning such as soy sauce and mirin, then served over rice. Recipes differ; bonito flakes or ginger can add flavor. The source describes marinating for about 10–20 minutes and garnishing with shiso, shredded nori or wasabi.

Daily recommendations, a tuna nanban set (マグロ南蛮定食) and a Hakata bowl (博多丼) also looked good. Most dishes were JPY 1,000–2,000, which felt reasonable for seafood described as delivered directly from Nagahama.

Drinks ranged from soft drinks to beer and highballs.

Wood gives the interior a warm feel, while elegant lighting and decorative touches reinforce the Japanese restaurant atmosphere. Overall, it felt clean and well kept.

Our tuna bowl arrived with seven thick slices in soy-and-mirin seasoning, a small tofu side dish, some Japanese-style kimchi, a sesame soy sauce and miso soup.

Pouring the sauce over the bowl gives it a savory, nutty and nicely salty finish.

Wasabi makes it taste a little brighter; for me, it was close to essential. The tofu was springier than the very soft Japanese tofu I often encounter, and bonito flakes on top added umami.

If you need more seasoning, there is soy sauce beside the table. Vinegar and ground sesame were there as well.

Hakata Station is a familiar starting point for a Fukuoka trip. Kuuten, on the ninth and tenth floors of JR Hakata City connected to the station, let us enjoy the city view and a satisfying seafood rice bowl in the same stop.
