雲の上の図書館 — the Library Above the Clouds

This library was built in 2018 as a central part of Yusuhara’s vision of a town where people and nature thrive together. It uses timber from Yusuhara and aims to preserve and pass on roughly 1,100 years of local culture while serving as a place to share information. A bouldering area and a cafe were included, making it a center for knowledge and learning as well as a place where people of different backgrounds and generations could meet, relax, and talk. Kengo Kuma’s distinctive ideas run through the Library Above the Clouds, including a ceiling that looks as though timber is projecting outward. It is worth stopping by at least once. It also makes a reassuring stop if rain interrupts a trip. The atmosphere inside was relatively relaxed: even visitors who were not there to read could enjoy spending time and chatting with friends.
